Handfasting Ritual – Step by Step Guide
When couples ask me about unique wedding rituals, the Handfasting Ceremony is always one of the first I suggest. It’s meaningful, visually powerful, and one of the oldest traditions we still use today. In fact, it’s where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from!
In this article, I’ll show you step by step how to include a handfasting ritual in your wedding — along with its symbolism and why it makes such a beautiful addition to your ceremony.
What Is Handfasting?
Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition where a couple’s hands are tied together with a cord, ribbon, or fabric to symbolize their union. Today, couples from all walks of life include it in their ceremonies because of its deep symbolism and versatility.
You can choose cords in colors that represent values like love, loyalty, and passion — or even incorporate family heirloom fabrics for a personal touch.
Step by Step: How to Do a Handfasting Ritual
Step 1 – Prepare the Materials
You’ll need one or more cords, ribbons, or ropes (about 1–2 yards long). Each color can symbolize something different.
Step 2 – Join Hands
The couple holds hands — usually right hand to right hand, or both together in a figure-eight style.
Step 3 – Drape the Cord
The officiant (or a chosen family member/friend) drapes the cord over the joined hands.
Step 4 – Wrap the Hands
The cord is gently wrapped around the couple’s hands one or more times. Each wrap can represent a vow or promise.
Step 5 – Tie the Knot
The officiant ties a loose knot to symbolize the bond of marriage. Some couples pull their hands apart, tightening the knot together — a powerful symbol of unity.
Why Couples Love Handfasting
It’s visually stunning and symbolic (“tying the knot”).
It can be customized with meaningful colors or fabrics.
Inclusive: children or family members can help drape or wrap the cord.
Perfect for traditional, spiritual, or non-religious ceremonies.
Final Thoughts
The Handfasting Ritual is more than just tradition — it’s a meaningful moment you’ll remember forever. Whether you choose simple ribbons or ornate cords, it’s a beautiful way to symbolize the promises you make to each other.
