How to Get Legally Married in California Without the Big Wedding
Your Quick Guide to Elopements, Courthouse Alternatives & Small Ceremonies in Los Angeles
Not every couple wants the big, expensive wedding. If you’re ready to tie the knot without all the stress, guest lists, or price tags, you’re not alone—and yes, you can absolutely get legally married in California without having a traditional wedding.
At Harbor View Weddings, we help couples do just thatβlegally, beautifully, and affordably. Whether youβre eloping, keeping it private, or just want a short and sweet ceremony, hereβs what you need to know.
β Step 1: Get a California Marriage License
Before anything else, you’ll need to apply for a marriage license. You can do this at any County Clerk’s office in California.
Here’s how:
- Both parties must be present
- Bring valid photo IDs (like a driver’s license or passport)
- No witnesses needed at this stage
- License is valid for 90 days from date of issue
π‘ You do NOT need to be a California resident to get married here.

π Step 2: Choose How You Want to Get Married
This is where your options open up. You don’t need a big event to make your marriage official. Here are three great alternatives:
1. Elopement Ceremony
Perfect for: Just the two of you (plus your officiant and witness, if needed)
We specialize in elopements in Los Angelesβwhether at the beach, a park, or our private patio. You bring the license, weβll bring the love.

2. Courthouse Alternative
Perfect for: Couples who want something legal and personal
The County Clerk offers civil ceremonies, but many couples want something warmer, prettier, or easier to schedule. That’s where we come in—with affordable, meaningful ceremonies that still keep it simple.
β¨ Our Micro Wedding option in Harbor City offers a relaxed, private setting for up to 15 guests.
3. Small Ceremony with Family
Perfect for: Couples who want a few guests and a heartfelt moment
We can perform ceremonies at your home, a local beach, park, or any small venue you’ve reserved. Keep the guest list small—keep the meaning big.

π Step 3: Complete and Return the Marriage License
After the ceremony, your officiant (that’s us!) will:
- Fill out and sign your marriage license
- Have your witness(es) sign if needed (only for public licenses)
- Return it to the county clerk within 10 days
Then you’re officially married—and you can request certified copies of your marriage certificate for legal name changes, benefits, etc.
π‘ Pro Tip: You Don’t Need a Reception to Make It Real
You don’t need cake, a DJ, or 150 guests to have a meaningful, beautiful moment. If you’re ready to say “I do” without the pressure or price, we’ve got you covered.
